BETHEL WINS B.A.S.S. CHAMPIONSHIP

BETHEL WINS B.A.S.S. CHAMPIONSHIP

Monday, September 10, 2018

The Bethel University Wildcats hit the road with ten Boats and twenty Bass Cat Anglers this past week. Tahlequah, Oklahoma was the destination of the 2018 Bassmasters event and the team had qualified a record number of anglers to attend the Bassmasters College Series National Championship. The team would fish the famous Lake Tenkiller, home of the Cherokee Indian Nation.

Three days of grueling practice on this beautiful waterway would prove frustrating to some and the high temperatures made the fishing almost unbearable at times. A sixteen inch size limit on the Bass as well as the high temperatures played a huge role in many of the 134 boats having to fish deeper water just to catch a few fish.

The Bethel team of Cody Huff and Garrett Enders found enough Bass to pull together a good weight and lead the tournament all three days for a wire to wire win.

With just three fish in their bag on the final day and a deficit of 7-4 to cover for the win, Enders confessed he had no words to describe the feeling and Huff just said, "I'm nervous, I'm ready to get it going."

Their three hardest-won fish of the tournament sealed the win with 9-2 for the day and a total of 41-6 for the three days on Tenkiller.

The Bethel duo will now travel to Junction City, Kansas along with the top three other teams for a head to head battle on Lake Milford.

The Bassmasters College Bracket series is the prize awaiting one of these eight Anglers as this championship sends one Angler to the coveted Bass Masters Classic which will be held next year in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"We have worked so very hard for this trophy and championship," said Coach Garry Mason. "Each Angler on the Bethel squad has contributed to this season and our wins have been overwhelming."

The Bethel Wildcats almost won the Triple Crown of College fishing as they hold the titles of both the 2018 Cabelas Boat US National Championship and the 2018 Bassmasters College Series National Championship. The Cats also placed second in the FLW College National Championship. No other school has come so close to the Triple Crown according to Coach Mason. Bethel's s team also won the ACA School of the Year Points Championship and the Cabela's Big Bass Bash this year.
