Latest News USA Bassin Coffeen Lake Fall/Winter Division January 2010 Tournament![]() Monday, January 25, 2010 WELL AND CHANDLER TAKE FIRST PLACE
Another well-run USA Bassin Coffeen Lake Fall/Winter Division tournament by Director Dan Blanton. Once again from take off through the weigh-in everything went very smoothly. There were 18 boats that came out to test their knowledge. The plant had just turned on the Monday evening prior to the tournament. It was down all the week prior to Monday. With the plant being down that week the jerk bait guys were happy. With all the wind and somewhat more than slightly stained water it appeared they might have their hands full. It was a cloudy windy day on Coffeen this past Saturday. The air temperature was pleasant with a high in the upper 40’s. The wind blew from the SSE at a steady 15-20 with some strong gusts. On with the stats!
First place went to the team of Glenn Wells and Donnie Chandler both of Troy, IL They weighed in a 5 fish limit setting the scales at 9.88 lbs. They keyed in on the famous Coffeen weed beds and lay downs. Glenn and Donnie were using Lucky Craft jerk baits and 1/2oz rattle traps to boat their fish. Glenn reported using 8lb Vicious line while using his jerk bait. Great job guys! This is two in row for Glenn cashing checks.
Second place and Big Bass went to the team of Jim Kelley of Maryland Heights, MO and his brother Sean Kelley of Afton, MO. Jim and Sean were using a custom painted trap and a shaky head to boat their 5 fish limit weighing in at 9.42 lbs. Their limit was anchored by Big Bass of the day weighing 3.17 lbs. Jim and Sean reported using their traps on 12 lb Seaguar line keying in on bare banks from 3 to 8 feet of water. While using their shaky heads at 25 foot with 8 lb Seaguar line. These two anglers also have been part of the check line two weeks in a row. Way to go guys!
Third place went to the consistent fish catching team of Marty Derganc of Benld, IL and Russell Frederick of Gillespie, IL. They weighed in a 5 fish limit weighing 8.77 lbs. The baits they used to boat their limit was a Mega Bass jerk bait and a chrome colored Big O. That’s right, a Big O! Using 12 lb P-Line Halo fluorocarbon they keyed on clay bank areas fishing 17-20 feet of water.
All said and done every team weighed in fish. There were 81 live fish brought to the scales and 81 live returned to the waters! This is a goal for us here at USA Bassin. A total of 131.30 lbs of fish hit the scales. Big bass of the day weighed in at 3.17 lbs and second big bass weighed 2.73 lbs. The quality fish this tournament were hard to come by but the numbers were there. With the plant staying on the quality fish will once again be coming from the weeds in the weeks to come.
