Take the win!!
12.61 lbs
A rainy, nasty, windy, cloudy, day makes for tremendous Coffeen Lake fishing. That is what we had this past Saturday December 11th. Tournament director Dan Blanton again ran things without a hitch. Thankfully the rain held off just enough to get the teams on their way at take off. Coffeen and nasty weather proved again to go hand in hand. The 29 teams that chose to take the Coffeen challenge proved just that. There were 25 limits brought to the scales. The 29 teams weighed in 137 fish, 8 of those in the 3lb range and one just over 4lbs. On with the stats!
First place and Big Bass went to the team of Mike Castelli of Collinsville, IL and Ronnie Castelli of Caseyville, IL. Their five fish limit weighed in at 12.62lbs. Their Big Bass hit the scales at 4.14lbs. Mike reported catching their fish on the outside edge of the weed line in 8-10feet of water. They reported concentrating on the north end of the lake and in cemetery cove. Mike reported catching their limit using Bandit crawdad colored crank baits, Eakins jigs, and his home made Chartreuse/sexy shad colored spinner bait. The Big Bass was caught using his homemade spinner bait.
Second placing weighing 11.97lbs with five fish went to the team of Jim and Matt Carroll of Hillsboro, IL. Jims technique of fish catching was pretty simple, 5/8oz red Lucky Craft Lipless Crank Baits. They reported catching their fish in 4-6 feet of water on the edge of the weed line at the north end of the lake. Jim reported making a run south but ended up heading north pretty quick. Their line of choice was 15# Seaguar Flouro. A 3.79 pounder anchored their five fish limit. Ranger Boats and Nameoki Marine sponsor them.
Third place went to USA Bassin Next Generation team members Chris and Joey Bardill both of Highland, IL. They brought a limit to the scales weighing 11.27 lbs. Joey reported catching the majority of their fish on rattle traps. He went on to say it really didn’t matter what color, “I caught them on just about any color I threw and wherever I decided to cast. It was just a great day,” he said. They reported catching their fish somewhat shallow to about 10 feet of water. Attached to their limit was a 3.71lb kicker that the team reported catching on the south end of the lake on a square billed crank bait.
We would like to thank all who attended the tournament. The next USA Bassin Coffeen Fall/Winter tournament will be held January 22, 2011. Hope to see you there!
