Division Spotlight: Rend Lake

Division Spotlight: Rend Lake

Monday, April 29, 2013

Illinois’ Rend Lake is a popular destination among bass anglers and there is a USA Bassin division that fishes the lake exclusively. At 18,000 acres, Rend Lake is a water supply reservoir that also provides recreation for a variety of fisherman targeting multiple species. Also known for excellent catfish and crappie fishing, it is a favorite of anglers throughout Southern Illinois. As far as the bass fishing goes, Tournament Director Mike Glenn says the lake is full of “footballs”, fat and healthy bass. The lake is setup well for just about any type of fishing according to Glenn, “There is lots of brush, some riprap and some stumps as well. It is excellent fishing with bass up into the seven and eight pound range, almost every tournament we have one weighed in that’s bigger than five pounds,” says Glenn. With the excellent fishing and the long winter, anglers were eager to get on the water for the first tournament of the year on April 20th. “Everyone was ready to get the season started, but it’s too bad the weather didn’t cooperate. We had 23 boats for the tournament and we launched with air temps around 38 degrees,” added Glenn. In total, 11 teams brought fish to the scales with a total of 15 fish brought to the weigh-in. Taking 1st Place was the team of Bunton and Easley who had four fish for 8.17lbs. Kevin Easley recalls the day as being very tough, “We were doing the same thing as everyone else, flipping and pitching jigs into the brush. We caught them all on black and blue jigs and just fished hard and were lucky enough to find a few.” Even with the cold weather, a big fish weighing 4.21lbs was brought to the scales by the team of Rock and Farmer. Mike Glenn, along with all of the anglers have high hopes for the rest of the season for the Rend Lake Division. There is no doubt that the fishing will improve as the weather gets warmer and the bass become more active. The next tournament for the Rend Lake Division is May 11th. By: Tyler Brinks
