TRACKER Cup Recap

TRACKER Cup Recap

Thursday, May 09, 2013

May 4th and 5th - After two days on Kentucky Lake, a winning team has walked away with a 2013 Tracker Pro Team 175 TXW with a 60hp Mercury Motor and Trailer. This prize, valued at $14,995 was the goal for all 144 teams who fished the event.

After qualifying for the event from multiple USA Bassin Divisions, teams from across the country traveled to Kentucky Lake for the TRACKER cup.

The fishing for the event was excellent and there were some large bass and tremendous bags weighed in during the weekend event. In addition to competing for the brand new Tracker boat, cash prizes as well as a “Mystery Weight” bass prize were the goal of each team of anglers.

The first place team was Shawn Penn and Steve Freeman, who weighed in a two day total of 45.51lbs. They reported having a Day 1 weight of around 17lbs and a Day 2 bag that was over 28lbs. They did completely different things each day and the result was a much better second day. “The first day we flipped all day and probably caught 15 keepers. We decided to switch it up for the second day and that’s how we had the bigger bag,” added Penn. The team decided to start cranking points with a deep diving Strike King Series 5 crankbait. “We ran probably 40 or 50 points that day and we caught fish throughout the day. We would fish every point we saw and fish it and then run to the next one,” said Penn. The right decision to change was the key to their victory.

In second place was the team of Ben Cherry and Josh Pollard who had a two day total of 41.28lbs. Like the winning team, they had a much better second day. “The first day was slow and we had around 17lbs but we really got into them on the second day. The current started a lot more on day two and we found them biting a crankbait,” said Pollard. Their second day weight was over 23lbs and was anchored by a 7lb largemouth and 5.6lb smallmouth. “We were cranking a deep diving crankbait in secy shad color,” shared Pollard. For their efforts the team received $5,600.

Third place was the JR Gowen and Mike Gowen who had a two day total of 40.54lbs. They stuck with their plan of flipping and pitching the buck brushes and did it for the entire event. “We were using black and blue Prowler tubes with a 1/4oz weight. The fish were in three to four feet of water,” shared Gowen. They added that the key was to fish very slow and believed that some of the fish are still moving in to the shallows to spawn. The team took home a prize of $2,500.
Big bass of the event was caught by the team of Jeff Bratcher and Carlos Willoughby who also finished the event in 7th place. Their big bass was caught by Bratcher and weighed 7.23lbs.  “I caught it flipping and pitching a beaver into the brush,” added Bratcher.

The winner of the mystery weight prize was the team of Jared Easley and Tim Simpson who weighed in a bass that hit the mystery weight of 5.00lbs. For this prize they won $12,500.
