The Connecticut State Regional

Monday, September 30, 2013
The Connecticut Regional is one of the most unique regionals throughout USA Bassin, it challenges anglers to be able to compete on two different bodies of the water as each day is held on a separate lake. The first day was held on Candlewood Lake and day two was held on Lake Zoar. The fishing proved to be better on Candlewood as the weights were overall much better and more teams were able to bring in good bags of fish. Tournament Director Jamie Verab also fished the event and was able to gauge the fishing conditions from his own experiences. “Candlewood was about what is normal, maybe a little less than it takes to lead there. Zoar was much tougher on everyone,” said Verab.
Taking the first prize was the team of Doug and Matt Eriquez who came from 7th Place on Day 1 to take the win. At Candlewood they had a limit for 7.84lbs but came on strong on Day 2 with a 12.22lb bag that was nearly five pounds better than any other team. Their total weight was 20.06lbs.
2ND Place was Jamie Verab and David Tokarz who had a two day total of 17.82lbs. They were leading after the first day with 14.32lbs on Candlewood but were only able to catch four small keepers for 3.50lbs on Day 2 at Lake Zoar. “We did the same thing both days and caught all of our fish on drop-shots. On the first day we caught 18 keepers total and they were all nice smallmouth over 2 pounds,” said Verab.
3rd Place was the team of Jason Swiantek and Ron Parker who had a two day total of 17.16lbs. They weighed in consistent bags of 7.84 and 7.76lbs. “We didn’t do too great in our last trip to Candlewood and this was headed the same way until we tried something new later in the day. All of our spots didn’t work out and at 12:25 we only had one fish. We started catching them really good at the end of the day,” said Parker. At Lake Zoar they were more optimistic due to Swiantek’s recent success there. “We were running and gunning all day, fishing as many spots as we could. To save time we didn’t even take off our life preservers because we going to so many different areas,” said Parker.
Jamie Verab and the Connecticut Regional anglers would like to thank their sponsors for another great event. Blue Point Brewery provided beer for the anglers after the event, Kistler Rods donated hats and shirts and Newtown Bait and Tackle provided gift certificates.
