Tuesday, January 30, 2007

1. Douglas Lake is a French Broad River TVA impoundment.

2. The dam was completed in 1943.

3. At normal pool the lake — it’s really a reservoir — covers approximately 28,000 acres, with over 500 miles of fishable shoreline.

4. Douglas is a combination electricity generating and flood control resource.

5. In a normal year water levels vary by 41 feet from low pool to high pool; that’s right, 41 feet! In some years that rise and fall is as much as 60 feet. Don’t worry; summer levels tend to be relatively stable.

6. It ranks #1 in BASS professional fishing tournaments for the most number of limits caught — 435. That record was set during a May, 2001 MegaBucks event. Rick Clunn won it.

7. It ranks #1 for total number of keeper bass ever caught in a BASS professional tournament — 2,210 during the same MegaBucks event.

8. The TWRA has placed an extensive network of fish attractors throughout the lake. (We’ll write about where they’re at, and how to find them, another month.)

9. Fishing ramps, docks and boats is a popular pattern on the lake. There are 12 public ramps scattered around the lake.

10. The lake benefits from a strong TWRA smallmouth stocking program and is being groomed as a smallmouth trophy venue. In 2006 approximately 2,500 were released. In 2005 that number was 7,650.
